27th March:
Of Taxes and Business:
A Business community is an essential nerve of a nation. It plays an effective and most important role of prospering national wealth and providing employment opportunity to millions of people. Government right from beginning has non-uniform Taxation policies for business community. It does depend more on whose ruling rather than who is giving your people bread.
Every ruling political party has given different taxation policy in its annual budget planning depending on how it is going to impact on their vote bank rather than what impact it is going to cause on society. No one has shown vision beyond vote bank and has harassed business community from time to time. "If you have favourable ruling party and/ or you are able to fulfil thy requisites you have a positive favour," otherwise you have to face changing taxation policies and troubles thereof.
A Business running needs to tackle three Governments at a time viz. Local Government, State Government and Central Government. Interestingly all these have different policies for taxation and different revenue generation techniques and most of the time being opposite Political parties, have no/ lesser facilities to offer to business community. Positive synchronisation of all these three is necessary for a healthier and cost effective business running. Local Taxes, Octroi, State Taxes, Central Taxes, Income Tax and apart from these Service Tax, Excise are such 'n' taxes that not only increases Customer burden but also officials rule over business community. An average businessperson has to bow down to Government officials increasing demands.
In today's changing arena, our Government should make a bold initiative. It should officially induct a group of Business community into Budget Formation process. The group apart from easing and making uniform taxation policy should minimise the rate increase effect on customers. It should also decrease the Transfer period of Government officials from 3-years to 1.5 or 2 years period.
